Tweetalig Onderwijs in de bovenbouw (4-, 5- en 6-vwo) van het CLZ
Het tweetalig onderwijs (tto) in de bovenbouw is enigszins anders van aard en opzet dan in de onderbouw. Het onderwijs in de vakken met een landelijk Centraal Examen wordt gegeven in het Nederlands.
In de bovenbouw wordt één derde van het totaal aantal lessen in het Engels gegeven.
Het Engelstalig onderwijs in de bovenbouw richt zich op de vakken met alleen een schoolexamen en op het IB examen English. Dat zijn de vakken Science, Art & Culture, Man & Society met als onderdeel Theory of Knowledge (TOK) en het programma ter voorbereiding van het examen Engels van de International Baccalaureate Organisation (het IB examen).
Naast het programma voor het IB English certificaat start in leerjaar 5 tevens de cursus European Literature. In het zesde leerjaar wordt het IB-programma afgerond met een mondiaal examen in de maand mei.
Naast de Engelstalige lessen volgt elke TTO-leerling in de bovenbouw een aanvullend programma. Dat bestaat uit een aantal verplichte activiteiten en een aantal activiteiten naar keuze van de leerling.
Zo zijn er in leerjaar 4 excursies o.a. naar musea en naar de Amerikaanse Ambassade.
In leerjaar 5 volgt een bezoek aan het Europese Parlement in Brussel,gecombineerd met een culturele activiteit.
In leerjaar 5 vindt ook de ‘Work Experience’ plaats hetgeen betekent, dat elke leerling zelfstandig een week stage loopt bij een bedrijf of instelling in een Engelstalige omgeving. Deze tto-werkweek wordt beschouwd als het hoogtepunt van het tto-programma in de bovenbouw. In overleg met hun docent regelen de leerlingen zelf een stageadres, dat bij een Engelstalige organisatie in Nederland of in het buitenland kan zijn. Eenmaal terug op school geeft elke leerling een presentatie van zijn activiteiten, zijn ervaringen en zijn belevenissen.
In de bovenbouw krijgt ook het programma debating gestalte. Het betreft wedstrijden debatteren, algemene retorica en spreken in het openbaar. Die wedstrijden vinden intern op schoolniveau plaats maar ook op het niveau van allerlei nationale en internationale wedstrijden, zoals de Model United Nations of het European Youth Parliament.
Al deze activiteiten maken ook deel uit van het diploma van Tweetalig Onderwijs dat de leerlingen in oktober in ontvangst nemen, drie maanden nadat zij de gewone vwo-opleiding hebben afgesloten. Tijdens deze ceremonie die uiteraard op school plaatsvindt, ontvangen alle geslaagde kandidaten tevens hun IB Engels A2 diploma.

Bilingual Education in the Senior School
Our bilingual programme continues in the senior school in a different form from the first three years. All our students will sit the regular Dutch state exams so are prepared for them in subject lessons given in Dutch. In the 4th year approximately one third of classroom instruction is in English. In the 4th year students follow the courses science, art and culture and the preparatory year for the International Baccalaureate (IB) English diploma course all taught in English. In the 5th year art and culture continues and a new subject ‘Man and Society’ based on the IB Theory of Knowledge course is given. As well the IB English A2 Diploma Programme commences and a course of European Literary history supplements this. In the 6th year literature and the IB programme continues and culminates in the exam in May just before the start of the Dutch central exams.
Parallel to the course work there is an additional bilingual programme taking place during these three years offering several optional activities for students. In the 4th year there is an excursion to a museum for art and culture and/or a science excursion. We are visited by diplomatic staff from the American Embassy in The Hague who talk to the students about the work of an embassy and the relationship between The Netherlands and the United States.
In the 5th year we visit the European Parliament in Brussels where we are received by the Dutch delegation. We also visit an exhibition in Brussels. Furthermore in the 5th year students organise their individual ‘work experience’ week, which is considered to be the highlight of the senior programme. During this week they work in an English speaking environment (often abroad) and if possible stay in an English-speaking home. Upon return students give a presentation about their week.
During the three years of senior school students are also invited to take part in national and international competitions and activities centred around debating, public speaking and writing. All these activities are recorded on their Bilingual School Certificate which is presented to them in October after they have left school together with their IB English A2 certificate.
